DIY - Make Your Own Vinegar

Learn To Make Your Own Vinegar From Scratch

Here's an excerpt from a blog article I found on how to make your own vinegar:
Fortunately, you’ll find this process relatively simple. Time is your friend mixed in with the occasional, brief tending steps. The vinegar making process uses the similar fermentation process as used in winemaking—in fact, technically speaking, you’ll pass the “wine” stage by the time you get to the finished vinegar product.  This is why you’ll find that the “cooking wines” offered commercially strongly resemble the smell of flavored vinegars. It’s also why I giggle a little bit when I have friends who are horrified when I use a little cooking wine in my cooking. If they only knew that a finished dish that uses wine in it has the same finished result that you get when you use vinegar. The alcohol is burned off in cooking and it ferments out during the vinegar making process. The key flavor that you end up with in the vinegar making process is the acetic acid. (ranging from 5 to 18%) tartaric acid and citric acid.

How to Make a Sawed off Shotgun

How to Make a Sawed off Shotgun

A sawed-off shotgun is a deadly weapon, and depending on local legal parameters, may be illegal.
"Sawed-off shotgun", any weapon made from a shotgun, whether by alteration, modification or otherwise, if such weapon as modified has one or more barrels less than 18 inches in length or as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches.
"Shotgun", a weapon having a smooth bore with a barrel length equal to or greater than 18 inches with an overall length equal to or greater than 26 inches, and capable of discharging a shot or bullet for each pull of the trigger.[1]
A modified shotgun is more maneuverable and lighter than a full size shotgun while retaining much of the destructive power. Decreasing the length will, however, reduce accuracy and increase recoil.
This guide is applicable only to citizens of the United States of America. Please check the laws in your country of citizenship prior to modifying your shotgun.

1. - Choose the shotgun you want to modify. Single and double barreled shotguns are often cheaper, but pump-actions and semi-auto shotguns have higher capacities.

2. - Decide on the length of the barrel. The barrel must be no less 18 inches unless you fill out the appropriate NFA forms and pay the $200 tax (at that point, after getting approval from the ATF, the barrel can be any length), while the overall length must be a minimum of 26 inches. It is advised to err on the side of legality by having a barrel length of 18 1/2 inches. Accuracy is only severely affected when over 50% of the barrel is removed. Often the best place to stop is anywhere after the hand-guard or magazine tube ends. Less length equals less weight and slightly increased recoil.

3. - Cut the barrel to your chosen length. The metal is not hardened steel and will cut easily. You can use a hacksaw, bandsaw or a circular saw equipped with a suitable blade.

4. - Put your shotgun in a vice being very careful to protect the barrel from the vice. Measure the barrel to your preferred length and wrap some masking tape around the barrel. Measure again and make several marks on the tape. Connect the marks, making a line completely around the barrel. Carefully cut the barrel using the line as a guide.

5. - File any imperfections made by cutting the barrel. Using a tubing cutter will result in a ridge on the inside of the barrel, this ridge should be filed smooth.

6. - Dress up the cut with emory cloth.

7. - Decide on a length of the stock. A stock allows the increased recoil to be controlled more easily. Keep in mind that the overall length of your modified shotgun must not be less than 26 inches.

Tips:
  • Apply with the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives prior to modifying your shotgun, this is only required if you are creating a Short Barreled Shotgun (SBS) or Any Other Weapon (AOW), namely a shotgun less than 26" OAL, or 18" barrel.
  • It is not suggested to use an expensive or beloved shotgun for this as it will ruin the resale value and you cannot undo this.
  • Do not try to use the shotgun one-handed without at least learning how to control the recoil.
  • SBS's can be a great deal of fun! Do your research, and with some simple paper work with the BATFE, you too can join the NFA world for a small fee. Don't listen to all the naysayers, or the great deal of Misinformation scattered across the internet. Do your research directly with BATFE, call them when needed, fill out the simple form, wait 60ish days, and you are well on your way to having a powerful, compact, sawed off shotgun!
Warnings:
  • Modified shotguns may be illegal in some places. As noted above local and federal laws apply. Visit BATFE's website for more info, or call them and request to speak with an NFA specialist. They are very helpful, and will answer any difficult or obscure questions.
  • Always follow basic safety rules when handling firearms.

DHS Wanting To Buy 7,000 Assault Weapons

DHS Asks for 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO Personal Defense Weapons Also Known as Assault Weapons

If ‘Assault Weapons’ Are Bad…Why Does DHS Want to Buy 7,000 of Them for ‘Personal Defense’?

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” (PDW) — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians. The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.
Citing a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP), Steve McGough of RadioViceOnline.com reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons.
The RFP describes the firearm as “Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) – 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.” Additionally, DHS is asking for 30 round magazines that “have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.”
Republican New York state Sen. Greg Ball also issued a press release this week bringing attention to the weapons purchase request.
Calls made to DHS seeking information regarding whether or not the RFP was accepted and fulfilled were not immediately returned on Saturday.
Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Thursday introduced legislation that would enact a so-called “assault weapons” ban. The bill would ban more than 150 firearms and limit magazines to 10 rounds. There is no expiration date on Feinstein’s bill.

Make Your Own Laundry Soap

years supply of laundry detergent

Make A Year’s Worth of Laundry Soap for $30.00!

Regular readers of this blog will know that I am completely sold on the No-Grate Laundry Detergent that I posted back in February of this year.  But, like I’ve said many times on this website, I am always open to new ideas! And I really liked this idea that someone posted as a comment awhile back.A YEARS worth of Laundry Soap!?!?  That’s an idea that is hard NOT to get behind!  Plus, I’ve been curious about the “dry” version of homemade laundry detergent that so many people are fond of. I have never tried it before. I figured it’s high time I did!

Here is the recipe that Anonymous posted (the text in red are my notes):
Anonymous said…
I make a dry version which works better for my family. I hate storing the bottles, shaking it up, and making it more often. I only make it once and it lasts for the entire year for our family of 4.
3 bars Fels Naptha, grated ($1.33 x 3)
1 box Borax  ($5.85  -  76 ounces)
1 box Washing Soda ($4.07  -  55 ounces)
2 cups of baking soda ($0.53 cents)
2 containers of Dollar Tree Oxyclean (I bought mine at Family Dollar store…SUN Brand…$4.00 each)
1-2 containers of Purex fabric softener crystals ($6.97  -  28 ounces)
Use 2 tablespoons per load. Put it right in the barrel if you have an HE washer.
To grate the bars of soap I decided to make it easier on myself and use my ancient Hamilton Beach food processor. I figured if it broke in the process it would give me a good excuse to get a new one! But fortunately (unfortunately?) it handled the soap just fine. I would offer one tip though if you decide to use your food processer to “grate” your soap: add something else to the bowl to aid in the process. I added a cup of the SUN Oxygen Bleach to each bar when I processed it. It seemed to help the blades do their job better.
